Height Adjustable Workcenters

The absolute best solutions for height adjustably.

The human body is not designed to remain in the same position for hours at a time. Adjustable height workcenters address this need to move and allow the user to change position frequently throughout the day. They are the foundation for any ergonomically equipped workspace and can be the single most effective means of achieving flexibility, maximizing comfort and increasing productivity in any office environment.

Your Current Work Environment:

Do you currently have a static (fixed height) workcenter? Is your only option for height adjustability your chair? Regardless of how good your working posture is, working in the same posture or sitting still for prolonged periods is not healthy. You should also remember to change your working position frequently throughout the day in the following ways:

  • Make small adjustments to your chair or backrest
  • Stretch your fingers, hands, arms, and torso
  • Alternate between seated and standing positions while you work

Simple Workcenter Solutions For Your Work Environment:

The height of your work surface should allow you to work without reaching or bending. Arrange commonly used items such as staplers and phones so that they are within easy reach.
Forearms should be parallel to the floor and at an approximate 90 degree angle from your upper arms.
Wrists, neck and head should be in a relaxed neutral position – not angled up or down.
The distance between your eyes and the monitor should be at least 15.7” or more – typically arms’ length.
To insure that neutral neck and head posture are maintained, individuals who wear corrective lenses, particularly multi-focal lenses, may need to adjust the height of their monitor to a lower position and tilt the monitor at 30°-40° angle.

Monitor Mounts

Smooth and versatile solutions.

Monitor arms can be used with either fixed height or adjustable height workcenters and are an excellent way to achieve the optimal level of adjustability recommended by ergonomists. When used appropriately, they can help workers avoid the development of musculoskeletal disorders (MSD), aid in the management of existing MSD, and help alleviate eye strain associated with long hours of computer use in the office.

Adjustable monitor arms enable users to maintain neutral position of their shoulders, neck and back by allowing them to position their computer screen in the perfect location and angle for their height and the type of task they are performing. This adjustability is especially beneficial to users who wear corrective multi-focal lenses.

Your Current Work Environment:

A monitor mount can be a great additional level of adjustability but if you have a fixed monitor or display, making changes to its height, distance from your eyes and placement can improve posture and productivity . You should also remember to change your working position frequently throughout the day in the following ways:

  • Make small adjustments to your chair or backrest
  • Stretch your fingers, hands, arms, and torso
  • Alternate between seated and standing positions while you work

Simple Monitor Mount Solutions For Your Work Environment:

Monitors or displays should be placed at extended arms length, so that the tip of your middle finger just touches the screen.
Dual monitor setups should adhere to the above distance and be placed slightly turned inwards.
If one screen or display is used more often, it should be placed directly in front of your field of vision.
Monitor height should be where your forward facing gaze hits the top 1/3 of the display or about where your browser’s url bar is.
Monitors should be just slightly tilted forward to avoid reflections from workplace lighting.

Space saving benefits

Using a properly designed monitor arm provides valuable space saving benefits that can increase the productivity of users, especially those individuals in smaller workspaces. Collapsible movement is one key benefit of a properly designed monitor arm, allowing the user to easily move the monitor out of the way for storage when not in use. Suspension space created by mounting the monitor arm to the back edge of a worksurface is another key benefit of an adjustable monitor arm, providing the user with substantially more usable work surface than a typical desk base monitor stand.

Collaboration benefits

A typical monitor arm will provide 180 degrees of horizontal rotation enabling users to share their computer screen during collaboration sessions or when conducting customer meetings.

Performance benefits

Research indicates that proper ergonomics in the office can increase worker productivity by 10-15% depending on the type of work being performed. Monitor arms are a key component to providing real ergonomic solutions that contribute to a more comfortable and productive environment.

Ergonomic Fact

Task Lighting

Adaptable and elegant lighting solutions.

How is lighting ergonomic? Notice the position you are standing or sitting in as you read this. Did you move to get better lighting? Did you position your body in a way to help improve the visual contrast of the text, reduce glare or avoid a shadow? That very movement is the essence of ergonomics.

How can lighting reduce operating costs? According to the US Department of Energy, 51% of the energy used in commercial buildings is consumed by lighting systems. However, many existing systems have much higher than recommended illumination levels from overhead lighting. In instances where too much illumination is provided through overhead lighting, companies can reduce their power usage and associated costs by simply reducing overhead light levels and applying proper lighting for specific tasks.

How does proper lighting increase performance? According to The American Optometric Association, excessive overhead or ambient lighting levels reduce the apparent visual contrast on computer screens due to glare.

Your Current Work Environment:

Most modern office environments are over-lit, causing unhealthy glare and eye-strain issues to workers. Making small but easy changes to the way you light your workplace can have positive affects to your health. You should also remember to change your working position frequently throughout the day in the following ways:

  • Make small adjustments to your chair or backrest
  • Stretch your fingers, hands, arms, and torso
  • Alternate between seated and standing positions while you work

Simple Lighting Solutions For Your Work Environment:

Between 40-50 foot-candles is an appropriate light level for most office environments.
Proper lighting levels vary based on task and age.
A mixture of both overhead lighting and local task lighting is the best set-up for proper ergonomic lighting.
Monitors or displays should never be placed facing outside windows.
Overhead lighting should never be placed directly above a monitor or screen but rather offset so that it is 45deg from the eyes.

Are You Considering Workplace Task Lighting?

Under-Cabinet task lighting

Under-cabinet task lights provide a wide distribution of light in areas that need additional illumination due to shadowing from overhead or side light sources.

Desktop task lighting

Desktop task lights add more than just a design element to an office. Using proper illumination for tasks can prevent glare, eliminate shadows and help improve performance with work that involves great levels of detail and contrast.
